Gates vs. Dayco vs. Denso: Which Brand for Your Honda?

We stock all three. Here's an honest breakdown of when each brand makes sense — and which one we'd put on our own cars. No affiliate agreements influenced this article.

We source from Gates, Dayco, Denso, Bosch, DNJ, and NPW. We don't have a financial incentive to push one over another — our margins are similar across all of them. What we do have is 6 years of order data, return rates, and customer feedback. Here's what that data shows.

Timing Belt Brands: Gates vs. Dayco vs. DNJ

Gates: The Default Choice for K-Series

Gates is the gold standard for timing belt kits on Honda K-series engines. Their Power Grip® GT3 belts exceed OEM tensile strength requirements by approximately 15%, and their hydraulic tensioners are direct OEM-spec replacements manufactured to Honda's exact geometry.

Gates also supplies timing components to Honda's production lines directly — you are literally buying the same supply chain as the factory belt, without the dealer markup.

Our return rate on Gates timing belt kits: 0.3% — the lowest of any brand we carry.

Best for: Anyone who wants the closest-to-OEM timing kit available in the aftermarket. If you're doing a 105,000-mile timing belt service on an Accord or CR-V and want to forget about it for the next 100,000 miles — Gates.

Dayco: The Complete Kit Specialist

Dayco's strength is their complete kit system. Their timing belt kits include every component — belt, tensioner, idler, water pump, and in some applications the cam seal — all spec'd as a matched system. This eliminates the risk of mixing components that may have slightly different tolerances.

Dayco's belt compound is slightly different from Gates — they use a higher percentage of HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) which performs better under sustained high-temperature conditions. For modified or high-performance K-series builds running at elevated coolant temps, Dayco has an edge.

Our return rate on Dayco timing belt kits: 0.6%

Best for: High-mileage engines where you want everything replaced at once. Also ideal if you're less experienced with sourcing individual components — the complete kit removes all guesswork.

DNJ: The Value Option That Actually Works

DNJ is the most affordable brand we carry, and they take heat on forums for it. Our experience: the criticism is partially earned and partially unfair. DNJ water pumps have had quality consistency issues in the past — we've seen elevated failure rates on specific pump SKUs and we've delisted those. The belt kits, however, have been reliable.

Our return rate on DNJ timing belt kits: 1.4% — higher than Gates and Dayco, but still low in absolute terms.

Best for: Budget-conscious builds where the labor is DIY and you're comfortable with a slightly higher parts risk. Not our first recommendation for a high-mileage daily driver.

Alternator Brands: Denso vs. Bosch vs. Generic Reman

Denso: Honda's OEM Supplier

Denso manufactures the alternators installed on Honda vehicles at the factory. When you buy a Denso alternator — new, not reman — you are buying the exact same product Honda buys, packaged in Denso's aftermarket box instead of Honda's OEM box. The part number cross-references directly.

Denso new alternators are our top recommendation for any Honda that's being kept long-term. The quality is simply not matchable at this price point.

Our return rate on Denso new alternators: 0.2%

Bosch: German Engineering, Global Assembly

Bosch remanufactured alternators are a strong option when new Denso units aren't available for an application. Bosch's reman process is among the most thorough in the industry — they replace all wear components, not just brushes and regulators. Their 2-year warranty is backed by their North American warranty program, not just the seller.

Best for: Applications where new Denso isn't available, or when budget is a factor and you want a quality reman from a known name.
